New hyper-local websites by accelerated e-journalism students launched

Submitted by rwash on Sunday, June 28, 2009 - 08:58

The Accelerated E-journalism class of 2009 released their new hyper-local publications in June covering a wide range of topics.

The subject areas cover arts, sports, sustainable living, social justice and outdoor living. Students could choose from a thematic or geographic approach. Some even decided to do both. Using either Blogger.com or Wordpress, the students created their own publications, which they can continue to publish after leaving the college. The students also used social media to enhance their publications and grow their audience.

Here are the sites:

Shooting the Wounded by Brian St. Denis

Inside/Outside with Kelly Marie by Kelly McKinnon

Green Isn't Mean by Marina Osmond

Think Glocal by Michelle Newlands

Social Justice by Keri Sculland

Ball by the Bay by Monique Glenn

Project Fear Less - Cameroon, Africa

Students provided coverage of Rotary International Polio Plus inoculation project in Cameroon, Africa, posting it to a special website called Project Fear Less.

The idea was to focus attention on the plight of the people. By giving something attention, it means we fear it less.

Read the compelling accounts of reporters in the field, bearing witness to the lives of the people and those trying to help them.
